By releasing narcolist, Duterte wants to control local politikos in May polls —Alejano
President Rodrigo Duterte released his list of “narcopoliticians” on Thursday night as a means to control local politicians in the upcoming midterm elections in May, according to Magdalo party-list Rep. Gary Alejano.
“The public-shaming that the government is resorting to is aimed to intimidate and control the local politicians in the coming elections,” he said in a statement.
“This is also a mere show of bravado to make the people believe that the war on drugs is working. It is not,” said the Magdalo lawmaker.
“The President’s release of list of politicians allegedly involved in drugs is abuse of power and discretion which tramples on the rights of every individual to due process,” he said.
“Again, there are legal procedures that should be observed regarding this matter. If the administration has solid evidence, then file appropriate charges and let them roll in the courts,” he said.
Alejano added: “The problem is, time and again, the list have been proven inaccurate, and even the President himself admitted to this.”
He urged the public and the media: “Let us not fall into their propaganda. This is a desperate act to save their fake drug war before the eyes of the public.”
