Retired chief justice Artemio Panganiban believes another Supreme Court (SC) justice should be tasked to handle the poll protest of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
With this, Panganiban believes that the magistrate who should handle the case be either Justice Marvic Leonen or Justice Estela Perlas Bernabe.
“I think it should be Leonen or Bernabe because to my knowledge, they were the ones who pushed for this resolution to have comments first,” he said recently during an interview over ANC.
The SC, sitting as Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET), has already concluded the recount of the 2016 vice presidential polls in the pilot provinces of Camarines Sur, Iloilo and Negros Oriental that was picked by Marcos.
SC Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa who has been assigned the electoral protest has already submitted to the PET his report on the results.
Caguioa has been viewed by the Marcos camp as favoring Vice President Leni Robredo since the magistrate has been appointed by former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
Last October 15, the PET decided to ask the parties to comment on the results as well as submit a memoradum about the third cause of action in the poll protest which is the nullification of votes in Lanao del Suir, Basilan and Maguindanao.
