Former Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casino has slammed Senator Bato dela Rosa for his warped sense of justice when he appealed to the public to give a second chance to convicted rapist-killer Antonio Sanchez, former mayor of Calauan, Laguna.

Casino said this was in contrast to dela Rosa’s “shoot first, ask questions later” policy in the drug war during his days as head of the Philippine National Police that saw thousands of extrajudicial killings of mostly poor suspects.

“Pag small time adik o pusher, no chance. Pag mayor na rapist at killer, may second chance?” asked Casino on Twitter.

Sanchez was convicted on March 11, 1995 by Judge Harriet Demetriou, who said his crime was “a plot seemingly hatched in hell.”

In an interview with ANC, dela Rosa said: “(If) it is determined by the Board of Pardon(s) and Parole that he (Sanchez) deserved that commutation, then why not? He deserve(s) a second chance in life.”

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra confirmed that Sanchez – who was sentenced to seven life sentences for the rape-slay of University of the Philippines Los Baños student Mary Eileen Sarmenta and the killing of her boyfriend Allan Gomez in 1993 – was among11,000 prisoners who might be released for good conduct.

Casino disputed dela Rosa’s claim that Sanchez had become a “changed man” inside the New Bilibid Prison.

“In 2006 Mayor Sanchez was charged for possessing shabu and marijuana inside his jail cell. In July 2010 he was caught with P1.5 million worth of shabu in his cell, hidden in a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 2015 he was caught with a flat-screen TV and aircon. Good conduct ba yan?” said Casino.
