Castelo proposes lifetime scholarships for SEA Games gold medalists
Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito Castelo on Wednesday proposed “full and lifetime educational scholarships” with allowances for Filipino athletes who won medals in this year’s Southeast Asian Games.
Castelo said the scholarships should be awarded not only to the athletes but also to their immediate families to recognize and honor their hard work.
“Free education is a fitting reward to our athletes who have demonstrated dedication, discipline and perseverance to bring honor to our country,” Castelo said.
The lawmaker noted that many underprivileged Filipinos enter sports to fight poverty. “Many of them have no means to gain education and they see sports as a way out of their sad plight,” she said.
“By giving them and their immediate families scholarships and allowances, we recognize their valuable contribution to the country and encourage other Filipino athletes to do the same,” Castelo added.
Figures showed the Philippines is leading in the gold medal tally, besting its 24-gold medal feat in the 2017 SEA games in Kuala Lumpur.
