This was how a source from the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC)
described Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and his gang in the
Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizational Committee (Phisgoc)
Foundation Inc. in their bid to jack up the cost of hosting the
biennial multi-sport event from 30 November to 11 December 2019.
The POC source, who declined to be named for lack of authority to
speak for the group, said Cayetano, who was then Foreign Affairs
Secretary, initially demanded a P9.5 billion budget for the 2019 SEA
Congress, however, only approved a P5 billion budget but Cayetano
reportedly appealed and was granted a P1 billion supplemental budget
for the event.
The P6 billion budget was apparently not enough for Cayetano and his gang.
Cayetano’s PE teacher, Phisgoc CEO Ramon “Tats” Suzara, revealed that
Phisgoc was currently raising another P1.5 billion from private
sponsors to reach their ideal budget of P7.5 billion.
The POC source found the budget “outrageous” as this was 14 times what
the country spent the last time it hosted the SEA Games in 2005. The
Philippines spent only P500 million – P350 million frm the government
and P150 million from the private sector – 14 years ago.
The bulk of the gargantuan budget would go to the sports facility in
Clark economic zone in Angeles City by the Bases Conversion and
Development Authority led by president Vince Dizon, the former
consultant of then Senate majority leader Cayetano.
