Taguig Rep. Alan Cayetano is not going down without a fight amid the election of Marinduque Rep Lord Velasco as the new Speaker.
“I will not allow you to burn this House down. Remember that. I love this institution, 1998 nandito na ako,” said Cayetano.
Cayetano warned Velasco that he has been used to bruising fights with giant players.
“Marami na akong Goliath na kinalaban,” said Cayetano in a press conference in which he was in a rush to leave. “Kung ang gagawin niyo papalitan lang ako, ‘di ako hahadlang, pero if you try to burn this House down, you’re in for one hell of a fight,” he added
Cayetano held the press conference after 186 lawmakers ejected him as Speaker and replaced him with Velasco in a session at the Celebrity Sports Plaza.
In a term-sharing deal brokered by President Rodrigo Duterte in June 2019, Cayetano agreed to hand over the Speakership to Velasco after 15 months or on October 14. But Cayetano has refused to honor the deal as he prematurely adjourned session even at the expense of delaying the 2021 budget, just as long as he would remain Speaker on his 50th birthday, October 29.
