Cayetano: House panel to vote according to conscience on ABS-CBN
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Monday said members of the joint House panel hearing ABS-CBN’s franchise application should vote according to their conscience on whether to grant a new broadcasting license to the media giant.
“Well, I cannot speak for the parties, kasi mag-uusap-usap din sila, but from the start, we’ve been urging a conscience vote,” the Taguig lawmaker told lawmakers.
“From the start we’ve been saying na kung ikaw ay pro, open mo ‘yung mind mo dun sa mga umaangal,” Cayetano said.
“Kung ikaw ay isa umaangal, open your mind sa sagot nung management. So, that’s why we made the hearings public, so that the people can decide for themselves,” he said.
“So, this is one of the rare cases where representatives will decide for the people, but the people themselves also has a stand on this kaya kailangan maging sensitive din ang bawat isa, maghahalo dito ‘yung ano ‘yung gusto ng kababayan mo at ano ‘yung tama at mali,” he added.
“When will you exercise your leadership, na ito tama, mali, whether it’s popular or unpopular, and when naman, you know, the people’s voice is supreme,” Cayetano said.
The joint House panel on legislative franchises and good government is still deliberating on whether or not to give ABS-CBN a new 25-year-franchise, after it closed down on May 5.
