Cayetano: ‘OFW department not a cure-all but giant step in right direction’
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Tuesday said the bills proposing a Department of Overseas Foreign Workers (OFWs) will not be a cure-all for ills facing migrant workers but will be a giant step in the right direction.
“I just want to emphasize that his bill can be described by one word, focus. Bakit focus, totoo po
kaya po naming magturo ng programa or ahensya na magfocus dyan… sa DFA yan, or sa DOLE yan, but that’s precisely the problem,” he said.
“Tinuturo parati kung saan san. Our OFWs don’t have all the time in the world,” Cayetano said, noting how they would only return home for a few days before flying out again.
Unlike telecom providers that can immediately address individual concerns, he said the government would just keep pointing OFW problems to other agencies.
“Bakit pag dating sa OFW paikot-ikot?” he said.
Cayetano said what was important about creating a department was that only one Cabinet-rank official would be in charge of OFW concerns.
“Isa lang ang masisingil nyo sa OFW department,” he said.
