House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Tuesday vowed not to be pressured by empty rhetoric and publicity-seekers into rushing the extension of ABS-CBN’s 25-year franchise.
“As the leader of the House, I disagree with the rush to judgement, whether in favor or against the renewal. And I will stand by this decision,” he said in a statement titled “Soul Searching In The Light of Press Freedom, Democracy, and Accountability.”
“Everyone from all sides of the issue say that this is an important debate – so allow us then to give it the due importance it deserves,” Cayetano said.
“Pressure us to do what is right regardless if it is popular or unpopular. But do not pressure us to do what is expedient for the sake of being popular. Congress is the wrong chamber for that,” he added.
“Unlike those who are motivated only by their ambition for higher office, or their dislike of the President, Congress does not have the luxury of treating this issue as a mere platform for publicity or a sounding board for empty rhetoric,” Cayetano said.
“We are not here to praise nor demonize the network. Despite our own personal feelings on the matter. Duty and love of country demands that we rise above our own personal biases and examine the matter squarely in order to arrive at a just decision,” he added.
