Cayetano on ABS-CBN franchise renewal: ‘We cannot promise you any decision’

BATANGAS CITY – The House leadership said it cannot give an assurance to broadcast giant ABS-CBN on whether or not the nine pending bills for their franchise renewal will be approved by the legislative body.
Cayetano made the remarks in Batangas City on Wednesday, as he announced that the legislative franchise panel under Palawan Rep. Franz “Chicoy” Alvarez is set to heat about 40 to 50 franchise bills, starting February, including that of the Lopez-controlled media conglomerate.
“We cannot promise you any decision until we finish the hearings, to be fair with everyone,” said Cayetano.
Cayetano reiterated that he committed to the Filipino people that the House of Representatives will be fair—meaning, both those in favor and against the franchise renewal of the Kapamilya network.
“We will hear the issues and also hear the replies,” he added.
Although he can’t gave a clear assurance for now, Cayetano stressed there is still enough time to for Congress to approved the embattled franchise renewal application the Lopez’s family’s “crown jewel” amid its impending expiration by the end of March.
Cayetano said two or three hearings will do for Alvarez’s panel and its members of theyr really want to approved the proposed legislations that seek grant a fresh 25-year franchise to the Kapamilya network.
“Kung ‘yung budget na P4.1-trillion natapos natin ng isang buwan, yun pa kayang franchise na siguro, sobra, ‘yung issues, two, three hearings sobrang exhaustive na yun,” said Cayetano.
