Cayetano throws shade at PDI, Bulletin, Star over pabanat headlines: Broadsheets are now like tabloids

House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday said the so-called tabloid mentality is now prevailing even in the country’s local daily broadsheets.
“Changes happen so fast. It’s really hard to keep up. Dati kasi klaro eh: Kapag tabloid, medyo pabanat talaga. (Pero) pero nowadays, broadsheets are like tabloids,” said Cayetano on Thursday during his speech during the top level management meeting of the Kapisanan ng mga Broadcasters ng Pilipinas (KBP) in Tagaytay City.
During the event, Cayetano has expressed dismay over the “fast-changing” media landscape.
The House leader stressed that the so-called “tabloid mentality” is also prevalent on various social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
Cayetano stressed that he was not asking them to write positive news about him or the Lower House as a whole, but he urged the media entities to “distinguish between misfeasance, malfeasance of one lawmaker as against the institution.”
Last week, Cayetano has scored broadcast giant ABS-CBN for allegedly giving a VIP treatment to certain candidates during the 2016 vice presidential polls.
According to Cayetano, one of the four vice presidential candidates that was previously invited by the television network has been given extended airtime to their primetime newscast TV Patrol compare to other contenders.
Cayetano said “there are real issues” that need to be tackled by Congress since no less than President Rodrigo Duterte is opposing the proposed franchise renewal of the Kapamilya network, which is under the KBP.
Cayetano last week month that the congressional franchise renewal application of ABS-CBN remains uncertain although he gave an assurance that the Lower House under his helm will exercise fairness in tackling the matter amidst earlier opposition from no less than the chief executive.
“We will be fair. It’s our duty to be fair, when we will take it up I’ve already stated in public at saka sa mga chairman, tapusin muna ang mga priority bills para naka-focus tayo diyan,” said Cayetano.
