Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has called for the resignation of Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Deles and other members of the government peace panel for sympathizing with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) instead of promoting the government’s interests.

“Ang nangyayari, ang OPAPP at ang peace panel natin, walang miyembro ng government. Lahat member ng MILF. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang nangyari sa kanila na pumalit sila ng side,” Cayetano told reporters after the Senate hearing on the Mamasapano clash on Monday.

He noted that Deles, government chief negotiator Miriam Coronel Ferrer and other members of the peace panel still continued to communicate with the MILF during congressional hearings even as the Moro group’s credibility has come into question due to its members involvement in the bloody Jan. 25 gunfight with Special Action Force (SAF) troopers.

Senator Francis Escudero, chair of the Senate finance committee, even reminded Deles and her colleagues during the hearing that they should be representing the government’s interests after Brig. Gen. Carlito Galvez, the chairman of the government’s Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities, quipped that more casualties would be recorded if law enforcement agencies do not coordinate their efforts with the MILF.

“Kanina nga nakaupo pa sila katabi ni [MILF peace panel chair Mohagher] Ginoong Iqbal imbes na nakatabi po sana dun sa kabila,” he said.

With the government peace panel’s allegiance supposedly in question, Cayetano urged President Benigno Aquino III to fire Deles and her colleagues and replace them with officials who can represent the State’s interests competently.

“The President should fire them and not even get their resignation,” he said.
