Vice President Leni Robredo is keeping her cool amid the series of tirades that President Rodrigo Duterte has launched against the Otso Diretso senatorial slate.

Robredo said she is confident that the candidates under the opposition ticket will be able to think independently and will not hide behind her for cover.

“’Yong mga kandidato namin have minds of their own. Hindi ‘yon [mag]tatago sa aking saya,” she told reporters Thursday (March 14, 2019), during her visit to Sumilao, Bukidnon, one of the areas being assisted by her office under its Angat Buhay program.

Asked what advice she can give them amid Duterte’s ire, the Vice President just reminded the Otso Diretso candidates to rise above the mudslinging.

“‘[Y]ong mga kandidato naman namin, kaya namang depensahan ‘yong sarili nila. Pero ‘yong sa akin, hindi ko ine-encourage ‘yong salita na hindi maganda. Kasi kaming mga public officials, dapat kami ‘yong halimbawa,” she said.

“Hindi rin siguro maganda kung, halimbawa, ako, makipagpatulan ako, kasi hindi na ako magiging magandang halimbawa. So ‘yong sa akin, okay lang na sinasagot ‘yong mga issues, pero sa isang paraan na ‘yong respeto nandiyan pa rin, hindi personalan,” she added.

As opposition leader, Robredo has taken an active role in campaigning for Otso Diretso, and is vouching for their competence and integrity despite being lesser-known candidates.

“Admittedly, mahirap iyong aming kampanya, dahil unang una, kulang ng resources. Pangalawa, dala ng walang makinarya. Kaya tulong-tulong kami para maipakillaa sila,” she said in a separate radio interview for the same visit. “Very encouraging naman iyong unang isang buwan ng lakad… [T]alagang challenge na ipakilala iyong anim, pero iyong kabutihan, kapag nakikilala sila, nakakausap sila, nakikita sila, ‘yong conversion naman mataas.”
