China can compel Chinese POGO workers to gather intel for Xi Jinping – Lorenzana
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana doubled down on his warning against the hundreds of thousands of illegal Chinese workers in Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).
“Knowing that Chinese Companies are mandated by the Chinese government to assist in intel collection for their government, it is not far fetched that individuals, likewise, could be compelled to do so,” said Lorenzana in a statement.
Lorenzana had raised the alarm on the rise of POGO offices and hubs or self-contained communities for Chinese workers in areas near military installations (Sangley Point in Cavite and Clark airbase) and the presence of their workers as a security threat to the country.
Lorenzana gave POGOs the benefit of the doubt saying it could only be “coincidental” that the buildings offered for POGO operations were near military camps and naval facilities.
” I believe that the POGO workers are here just for work only. What I am alarmed is the potential that they could be tapped for info gathering purposes,” said Lorenzana.
“That is why I support the relocation of the POGO centers to economic zones that are not proximate to military camps,” he added.
