Choose local: Manny Piñol thumbs up on use of bamboo face shields

The Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) is promoting the use of bamboo-framed face shield as a tool to prevent further spikes in coronavirus infections.
MinDA chief Manny Piñol, in a statement yesterday, said Junroe Barrios, a young agricultural engineer from M’lang, North Cotabato, is collaborating with local bamboo farmers to produce face shields using “thinly stripped bamboo slats as the frame.”
The project, according to Pinõl, can provide income and livelihood to bamboo farmers and their families whose wages have been adversely affected by the pandemic.
“We need commitment of market so that MinDA could link up with the Development Bank of the Philippines to provide the group the needed financing for mass production,” the former agriculture secretary said.
“Gusto niyong makabangon kaagad ang ekonomiya? Huwag na muna kayo mag-isip ng importation kaagad. Patronize local products because by doing so we will be utilizing local raw materials providing income to the local farmers,” he also said.
