Coming soon: Binay writing survival guide vs cyberbullying
How do you handle social media bashing? Sen. Nancy Binay is preparing a coffee table book listing down 45 tips to deal with bashers and haters.
Much as she would like to have it published in time for her birthday next month, Binay said it’s no longer possible since she still has to come up with 42 tips.
“I am coming out with 45 tips kasi I am turning 45 this year,” she said.
In her Facebook account, Binay last Apr. 8 advised those being cyber bullied to just “ignore trolls and bots.”
Recent events, however, made her to think thoroughly the matter and led her to a decision to come up with a book on how to deal with online bashing.
She narrated to reporters an incident where a man approached her while she was at the airport and requested to have a photo taken with her.
“Lumapit sa akin kung puwede daw magpapicture siya kasi iyong anak daw niya sobrang kamukha ko. So papadala daw niya sa anak niya. So nakuwento niya bigla sa akin na yung anak din daw niya na-babash kasi kamukha niya ako. So parang napaisip ako na kawawa naman ang anak niya. I felt guilty. I felt responsible na nababash siya kasi kamukha ko,” the senator said.
“So napa-isip ako kung ano ang puwede ko i-advise sa dad kung paano maka-cope ang anak niya sa bashing. Sabi ko nga sabihin na lang sa kanya na wag pansinin, na wag damdamin so parang naisip ko din na baka siguro I have that responsibility to tell other people how to survive social media bashing,” Binay said.
The senator said she’s well aware of the impact of cyber bullying, especially since there had been already recorded incidents of suicides due to online bashing.
“So I had to share ano yung coping mechanism ko,” she said
“It’s not just for me. Iyon na yung para sa next generation kasi ito na yung world nila. Tayo naman dati chismis lang e ngayon may ano na. Iba na,” Binay said.
The senator admitted getting hurt every time she gets bashed by netizens, often because of her looks and on whatever she’s wearing.
Fortunately for her, Binay said, whatever pain she would experience, it usually lasts for few seconds only/
“Kasi iyon ang aking mindset. Yung tignan ang positive side. After a while nga noong hindi na ako pinapansin parang na-miss ko,” she said in jest.
Binay said she refused to engage with her bashers because “I will never given them the satisfaction (of breaking me).”
