Constant companion: Duterte’s campaign donor joins Romualdez in Palace meeting with President
Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez wasn’t alone when he met President Rodrigo Duterte after midnight Thursday (June 27) in Malacañang.
Politiko learned that Romualdez was accompanied by Davao-based businessman Samuel “Sammy” Uy, one of the major donors to Duterte’s campaign.
A source told Politiko that House Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s Girl Friday, Medy Poblador, was also supposed to Romualdez and Uy in the meeting with Duterte but she begged off.
Arroyo reportedly assigned Poblador to find out what Duterte wants in the next Speaker.
Uy has been spotted frequently together with Romualdez in recent weeks as he courts the Dutertes’ nod for his speakership bid.
The businessman joined Romualdez in events with presidential children Sara, Paolo and Sebastian in Davao City earlier this month.
He was also with Romualdez at Hugpong ng Pagbabago’s victory party in Makati City Monday (June 24).
Uy, whose businesses include the egg production company Davao Farms, donated P30 million to Duterte’s 2016 presidential campaign.
Romualdez is widely believed to be Arroyo’s choice for Speaker over other contenders: Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco.
