Copying Diosdado Macapagal for 2022? Robredo: Masyadong malayo pinupuntahan ko!
Vice President Leni Robredo insisted there’s no politics involved in her frequent visits to the provinces after Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon remarked that she’s no different from former Vice President Diosdado Macapagal, who eventually became President.
During the Senate finance committee’s hearing on the Office of the Vice President’s 2020 budget proposal, Drilon said he was reminded of Macapagal because President Rodrigo Duterte didn’t give Robredo a Cabinet post.
“President Carlos Garcia did not give Diosdado Macapagal any work and therefore what Diosdado macapagal did for the six or four years that he was in office was to go around the country helping the needy,” the senator said.
“Consequently, Macapagal won the presidency. Whether or not there is a parallel to that, I’m just stating facts,” Drilon added.’
Robredo, however, denied she is using her post to campaign for higher office ahead of the 2022 elections.
“Siguro similar kami [ni Macapagal] in the sense na pareho kaming walang Cabinet post. Pero yung kaibahan yung mga areas kung saan ako nagpupunta sobrang lalayo, mahirap puntahan, at konti ang tao,” she told reporters after the hearing.
Robredo said she wouldn’t go to far flung areas if she were thinking about the 2022 elections because only a few voters are there.
Asked if she were considering the same path Macapagal took to the presidency, Robredo said she isn’t planning anything.
“Mahirap sabihin na considering dahil yung trajectory ko sa pulitika, walang pinlano. Parating bukas sa kahit anong possibilities pero kailangan lang gawin ang mga dapat gawin,” she said.
