Daig pa si Tulfo: Wally Sombero isn’t only Jack Lam’s boy, he’s also an investigative journalist
Former police Supt. Wally Sombero wears many hats.
Sombero is currently in the news for being the representative of controversial gaming tycoon Jack Lam who was caught running an unlicensed online gaming casino with thousands of illegal Chinese workers at the Fontana Casino and Leisure Park in Clark, Pampanga.
Sombero is accused of bribery by two Immigration Commissioners – Al Argosino and Mike Robles – but he claimed that they were extorting P50 million from Lam to release the Chinese workers and fix the Chinese businessman’s online casino troubles.
But the colorful Sombero – who points out that a superintendent was equivalent to a one star general – is more than Lam’s troubleshooter.
Sombero is also an international poker player; a partner of Atong Ang for casino junket operations; and a self styled expert on gambling from small town lottery to online casino.
He claims to be the president of the Asian Gaming Service Provider Association made of information technology firms in online games operating out of the Cagayan Export Zone Authority.
But what made us fall off our seat is Sombero’s claim in his complaint against Argosino and Robles with the Office of the Ombudsman that he was an investigative journalist and anti-jueteng crusader.
“I am also an investigative journalist and I have focused my life’s work on (sic) opted to study the roots and the culture of this illegal numbers game, and one way to solve this is to understand the industry that has been there since time immemorial,” said Sombero.
Being chummy with hard-hitting columnist Ramon Tulfo doesn’t make one a journalist, much more an investigative reporter. But having as business partner a former Estrada “midnight” Cabinet member, Atong Ang, in casino junket operations should give him a “deep throat” to ins and outs of jueteng, masiao and small town lottery.
