Senator Leila De Lima expressed exasperation Saturday (June 27) over the proposal of presidential son and Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte’s proposal to rename the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Paliparang Pandaigdig ng Pilipinas (PPP).
De Lima said the motive behind Duterte’s bill, House Bill 7031 is “plain and simple politics,” as well as “stupidity.”
“Ano na namang kabalbalan ito?The lawmakers pushing for it has a distorted sense of nationalism, if at all. Such a proposal is devoid of any salutary objective,” she said in a statement.
Duterte, together with ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Yap and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco, filed House Bill 7031 renaming NAIA because it needed to be identified with the Philippines.
“With the proposed name, the airport will easily be identified as the international doorway of the country, in view of it being in Filipino language and branding it as the international airport of the Philippines,” they said.
