De Lima on Mindanao bombings: Is Duterte still in control?

With military and police caught flat-footed in the twin bombings in Mindanao, Senator Leila de Lima fears President Rodrigo Duterte has lost his grip in Mindanao despite two years of martial law.

“Is Duterte still in control? Sunod-sunod ang mga karahasan, ang mga patayan,” said de Lima during an interview after her arraignment at Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 205 on Friday.

De Lima was surprised why the military and police were ill-prepared for the bombings despite getting a boost in their budget. “Nasan nga ba napupunta ang bilyon-bilyong Intel funds?” she asked.

On January 27, twin blasts hit the Jolo Cathedral that left 22 dead and more than 100 injured. Three days later, a Zamboanga City mosque was rattled by grenade blast which killed two and injured 4 others.

De Lima blamed the violence on Duterte. “Kapag kasi marahas ang namumuno, marahas rin ang lipunan,” she said.
