De Lima slams Martires for hiding Duterte’s SALN: Ombudsman ka ba talaga?
From Tanodbayan, the Ombudsman has now become “the Traydorbayan.”
This was how Senator Leila de Lima described Ombudsman Samuel Martires after the latter refused to release Duterte’s statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
In refusing to release Duterte’s SALN, Martires said he has the duty to protect public officials. But, the detained senator rejected Martires’ reasoning.
“This government’s act of turning all principles of accountability and transparency on their head is now complete. This government only becomes more disgusting by the day,” she said.
“Perhaps former SC (Supreme Court) Justice Martires has forgotten the definition of Ombudsman and needs reminding,” De Lima said.
It is a term of Swedish origin which means “an official who is charged with representing the interests of the public by investigating and addressing complaints of mal-administration,” she said.
“The Ombudsman is never charged with representing the interests of public officials. It always represents the interests of the public,” De Lima added.
