Defensor twits Romero for backing Velasco: He should maintain his neutrality
By JOHN CARLO M. CAHINHINAN
Returning Congressman Mike Defensor (Anakalusugan Party-list) said Party-list Coalition Foundation, Inc. (PCFI) President and 1-Pacman Rep. Mikee Romero should maintain his neutrality over the hotly-contested Speakership battle next month ahead of the bloc’s scheduled secret voting on Wednesday.
Defensor’s statement came after Romero committed a blunder last Thursday when he bared his support for the Speakership bid of Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco through the PCFI’s Viber group.
“I feel he should maintain his neutrality and just make a decision in the end,” said Defensor.
Defensor was referring to Romero’s response to Deputy Speaker and AAMBIS OWA Party-list Rep. Sharon Garin’s post in the PCFI’s Viber thread on the invitation of Taguig-Pateros Representative-elect Alan Peter Cayetano’s group for a workshop for neophyte solons
The Cayetano-led event will proceed on Tuesday, June 18, at Quest Hotel, in Clark, Pampanga amid the scheduled three-day course for lawmakers organized by the secretariat of the House of Representatives. It will be facilitated by the University of the Philippines–National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP NCPG) starting Monday, June 17.
In response, Romero told Garin that she should immediately alert Velasco over the supposed upcoming event organized by Cayetano’s camp. Romero only knew few minutes later that he actually sent his reply in the Viber Group where all the 54-PCFI solons are members.
Defensor, a former Presidential chief-of-staff under the Arroyo administration believed that Romero has committeed anunfortunate mistake because since the PCFI is still in the process of forming a decision for the entire bloc.
But the returning lawmaker said he respects Romero’s personal preference over the Speakership race of he’s leaning towards a Velasco Speakership.
Assistant Majority Floor Leader Jericho Nograles (Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta Party-list) said last Tuesday said that the much anticipate showdown for the House leadership has already trimmed down to just between reelected Velasco and incoming Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez as far as majority of the party-list solons are concerned
Nograles stressed that majority of the members in their bloc have decided to narrow down their choices now just between the said solons because the coalition believed that “they are the only ones who are truly serious in the bid for the Speakership.”
