Democrat rock star Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (or AOC) has tagged tech giants such as Facebook and Google and media monopolies like Rupert Murdoch-Fox as the biggest threat to journalism.

The youngest member of the US Congress said journalism was the bedrock of democracy and people have the responsibility to pull it out of the ICU.

In a tweet, AOC wrote: “Gonna keep it : The biggest threats to journalism right now are tech monopolies & concentration of ownership. Healthy democracy *requires* high-quality journalism. W/o a wide range of independent outlets & the revenue to sustain them, our democracy will continue to crumble.”

“The fact of the matter is the current monopoly trend is societally & economically unsustainable. We can’t simply accept the cliché that ‘journalism is dying’. Journalism will only die if we choose not to fight for it – and if journalism dies, our democracy will, too,” wrote AOC, a millennial who won a seat on Capitol Hill with the help of social media.

AOC said most social media platforms not only have “zero incentives to disseminate high-quality, true information” but these networks have actively repelled efforts to make them more accountable.

She noted how Facebook went out of its way to pay for information to undermine people who have blamed the world’s largest social network for the viral spread of fake news.
