‘Di ako naghahabol! Duterte vows to quit if involvement in Sereno’s ouster proven
President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to step down if it is proven that he had a hand in the ouster of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
“I said [if] there was one congresswoman or congressman or single justice magsabi may kinausap ako diyan, I can guarantee you, I will resign,” Duterte told reporters Wednesday (May 16) in Malacañang.
Duterte said it was “out of his character” to run after his enemies.
“Hindi ako nanghahabol ng tao,” he said. “Kaya ngayon I challenge everybody and anybody. Magturo ng isang congresswoman or isang congressman o senador or Justice ng Supreme Court na nilapitan ko o maski na abogado lang naman kung wala na kayong makitang iba. Hindi naman ako nakikialam.”
Voting 8-6, the Supreme Court granted the quo warranto case against Sereno and invalidated her appointment as Chief Justice.
The Supreme Court ruled that Sereno was unqualified to become Chief Justice due to her failure to submit all of her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALNs) to the Judicial and Bar Council, which vets applicants to the top post in the judiciary.
The quo warranto case against Sereno was filed on the government’s behalf by Solicitor General Jose Calida.
