The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will run after those involved in the smuggling of persons across quarantine zones without undergoing testing for the COVID-19 virus, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said on Wednesday (April 7).
Guevarra made the move after Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade appealed on law enforcement authorities to stop the activities to halt the further spread of COVID-19.
Tugade said he received reports that closed vans and trucks were being used to smuggle untested persons into Metro Manila in exchange for cash.
“We’ll respond to the call of DOTr Secretary Art tugade,” Guevarra said.
“I’ll direct the NBI to look into these alleged incidents of ‘human smuggling’ and conduct a full-blown investigation if there is any indication that the practice is widespread,” he added.
