Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta has decided to finish his term early ahead of his compulsory retirement in 2022.
Supreme Court (SC) Spokesperson Brian Hosaka on Tuesday (Dec. 1) confirmed that Peralta has been circulating a letter to to his colleagues at the high tribunal expressing his intention to take early retirement.
“I have asked him personally and he confirmed it,” Hosaka said.
“The Chief Justice did not elaborate further but said that he will make a formal announcement in due time,” he added.
Peralta is supposed to retire on his 70th birthday on March 27, 2022.
He was the third chief justice appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Peralta replaced retired chief justice Lucas Bersamin who retired on his birthday on October 18, 2019.
