‘Di pwedeng Lopez pa rin! Mike Defensor: ABS-CBN should re-apply for franchise as a ‘different corporation’
Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor hinted Tuesday (July 14) that ABS-CBN must be freed from the Lopezes’ control if it were to apply again for a new franchise.
In an interview on ANC’s “Headstart,” Defensor said ABS-CBN should be a “different corporation” when it applies for a new license to operate.
“There’s a problem if you were found violative of certain laws like the labor laws, taxes that we were discussing, PDRs, so on so forth,” he said.
“But as to the ownership, I’m not so sure because if you check the ABS-CBN Corporation and you find certain personalities also part of another corporation, then that might also be reason for more scrutiny, more clarification,” Defensor added.
Voting 70-11, the House legislative franchises committee denied ABS-CBN’s franchise application on July 10 due to its various alleged violations.
Among the supposed violations cited by the committee were the network’s sale of Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs), labor cases, use of tax avoidance schemes and the dual citizenship of ABS-CBN chairman emeritus Gabby Lopez.
