The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) board has slapped a P1.134-billion fine on Manila Water Company Inc. over the supply shortage that affected its service areas in Metro Manila and Rizal in March.
MWSS said in a statement Wednesday (April 24) that its board “unanimously approved” the MWSS Regulatory Office (RO)’s recommendation to fine Manila Water over its failure to comply with the concession agreement.
The contract required Manila Water to provide water supply to its customers 24/7.
The penalty is broken down as follows: a P534-million fine and a P600-million fund to develop a new water source.
The sanction imposed by MWSS on Manila Water is on top the P500-million worth of refund that the water concessionaire has implemented for customers affected by the water shortage.
