‘Di susuway kay Duterte! Drilon doubts NTC will allow ABS-CBN to operate with expired franchise
Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon doesn’t think the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will give ABS-CBN a temporary permit so it can remain on air after March 30, when its franchise expires.
Drilon pointed out Monday (February 17) that NTC is under the Office of the President, and President Rodrigo Duterte has been clear about his opposition to ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid.
“Given the position of the President, I doubt whether the NTC will allow that extension,” he said.
Drilon believes Solicitor General will question the legality of ABS-CBN’s operations if it stays on air beyond March 30.
“It is almost certain that on April 1, 2020, the Solicitor General will question the continued operation of ABS-CBN with the expiration of the franchise on March 30, 2020,” he said.
Drilon has filed Senate Joint Resolution No. 11, which seeks to allow ABS-CBN to operate until December 2022 while Congress deliberates on its franchise application.
