The four commissioners of the Energy Regulatory Commission will have to serve their one-year suspension without pay despite filing an appeal.
Malacañang on Tuesday (January 23) confirmed that ERC chairperson Agnes Devanadera has been directed to implement the suspension orders on Commissioners Gloria Victoria Yap-Taruc, Alfredo Non, Josefina Patricia Magpale-Asirit, and Geronimo Sta. Ana.
“I confirm the execution of the suspension order,” he said in a message to reporters.
The Office of the Ombudsman suspended the four commissioners for allegedly favoring Meralco and other power utilities by delaying the bidding for power supply contracts.
The suspension order and decision to file charges against the ERC commissioners were the Ombudsman’s response to the complaint filed by the non-government organization Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas in 2016.
The group accused the ERC officials of favoring Meralco, a company owned by businessman Manny V. Pangilinan, by resetting the CSP’s effectivity date from April 30, 2016 to November 30, 2016 to exempt PSAs from undergoing public bidding.
