Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte described him as “Machiavellian” and former Speaker Bebot Alvarez is not letting her down.
Taking a page out Nicholas Machiavelli’s “The Prince”, Alvarez is employing a divide and conquer strategy by egging Sara’s brother, Congressman-elect Paolo Duterte, to add his name to the aspirants for Speaker in the 18th Congress.
“Why not? Huwag nating pagsamahin ‘yung porket anak siya ng Presidente hindi na siya pwedeng mag aspire for Speakership,” said Alvarez in an interview with ANC’s Karen Davila.
“In fact pag tumakbo si Congressman Paolo for Speaker, susuportahan ko. I will support him 100 percent,” he added.
Alvarez does not see anything wrong with the President controlling the House, where he already has a supermajority, through his own blood.
“Delicadeza? Ano problema kung anak siya ng pangulo? Kung mapapatunayan naman na magiging magaling siya na Speaker at may liderato siya, why don’t we give him a chance to prove himself,” Alvarez said.
Alvarez is bidding to return as Speaker in the next Congress but Sara, who masterminded his fall from grace as Speaker in July 2019, is again standing in his way.
Sara plans to be a kingmaker anew in the 18th Congress and has reportedly endorsed Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco for Speaker.
