Department of Justice (DOJ) Undersecretary Deo Marco on Tuesday (Oct. 29) defended the decision of Bureau of Correction (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag to suspend the visitation of New Bilibid Prison (NBP) inmates.
Marco explained the lockdown at the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa City was made due to the ongoing demolition of illegal structures at the NBP.
“Kaya suspend because of the demolition,” Marco said.
“Delikado for those people to visit, to be there,” he pointed out.
On the other hand, the Undersecretary asked families of inmates to be patient since the BuCor will soon lift the lockdown.
Families of inmates have been calling for the lift of the lockdown whcih they claimed has already resulted in the deaths of prisoners there.
To this, Marco assured that the reported deaths at the national penitentiary has nothing to do with the ongoing BuCor operations at the NBP.
“Mga cause of deaths hindi related sa ongoing demolition,” he said.
