DOJ shrugs off US Senate resolution: Cases vs. De Lima, Ressa stay
The Philippine government will ignore the resolution of the United States Senate which called on the release of detained Senator Leila De Lima and the dropping of charges against Rappler executive Maria Ressa, said Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
“Certainly not,” Guevarra stressed.
The Secretary explained the US Senate resolution carries no weight.
“Their suggestion is against the rule of law because we are following the proper legal and judicial processes,” he said.
“So bakit mo biglang i-drop,” he added.
De Lima is facing drug charges concerning the proliferation of the illegal drugs trade at the New Bilibid Prison.
While, Ressa is facing multiple charges including tax and libel.
“Why don’t you just let the process come to its whole termination, hanggang sa very end,” Guevarra told the US Senate.
