The country could have been in a really bad shape if the opposition forces were supposedly leading the COVID-19 pandemic response.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teddyboy Locsin Jr. painted a doomsday scenario for the Philippines if the opposition team, not President Duterte, won the 2016 elections. Millions of Filipinos could have allegedly died under a government led by Duterte’s political rivals.

Locsin made the comment after a netizen tweeted the need to balance the economy and observe health precautions to overcome the latest COVID-19 case surge.

“No need to tell people to balance anything; they’re doing fine until some of them are not…but they come around,” Locsin tweeted March 14.

“Only the Opposition is making it out like doomsday which it would be if they won the 2016 elections. By conservative estimate 3.5 million deaths by now. That dumb,” he said.

Malacañang had said the government has been “excellent” in managing the COVID-19 spread after supposedly limiting the number of deaths and infections.

A year since the country was placed on lockdown, the Department of Health reported the cases of coronavirus have reached 621,498 with 13,371 deaths. The country’s cases have been increasing in recent days following the detection of new variants and alleged failure of some people to follow health protocols.
