Drilon backs planned prisoner swap deal with China: Hindi unusual yan!

A bilateral agreement on transfer of sentenced persons between the Philippines and China can be advantageous for Filipinos, Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said.
This was because China imposes death sentences for drug-related offences.
“Isa iyan sa mga bagay na titingnan nang husto,” Drilon said in an interview on DZBB Sunday.
During his first state visit to the Philippines in November last year, Chinese President Xi Jingping said he and President Duterte have agreed to thrash out a possible prisoner swap between Filipino and Chinese.
Since 2011, the Xi government has executed a total of five Filipinos convicted of drug trafficking.
Drilon said the country’s prisoner-exchange agreement with China is not unusual because the Philippines has existing prisoner exchange treaties with other countries.
“Pwede. Mayroong mga existing treaties on exchange of prisoners. Isa na roon yung sa Spain noon. Hindi po unusual iyan,” added the senator from Iloilo City.
Ratification, according to him, is still needed though.
“Isa iyang treaty na kailangang i-ratify. Ang custody ng mga na-convict sa atin na dayuhan ay pwedeng doon i-serve ang sentensya sa kanilang bayan. Hindi ibig sabihin na pakakawalan,” Drilon concluded.
