President Rodrigo Duterte is not turning his back on his promise to give public school teachers a raise, but they can use a little more patience.

“The next in line would be the teachers. We’re working on it like what I have promised. But remember that there are millions of teachers,” said Duterte during the oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected local government officials of Cagayan de Oro City Wednesday.

The President explained he doubled the salaries of soldiers and police first because there are only a few of them.

“There are only a few policemen, something like 160 and there are 130 in the military. That is why their salary was increased,” according to him.

Duterte’s spokesman Salvador Panelo had said the salary increase for teachers would cost the government P150 billion.

“They are doing something about it, our economic managers. Kasi you have to source funds. Kasi as the Budget Head was saying last night, if you increase 10,ooo pesos for every teacher, you need about [150] billion pesos,” added Panelo.
