President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday evening criticized former President Cory Aquino for declaring agrarian reform in the Philippines but sparing Hacienda Luisita, owned by the Cojuancos, her maternal family side, from land distribution.
Duterte made the statement a day after the 10th death anniversary of the country’s first woman president.
“Aquino declared land reform for the entire Philippines but exempted [Hacienda] Luisita. Her own land,” said the President in a speech delivered in Davao City.
“When she said, I would like to declare land reform in all of the Philippines, hindi niya sinali ang sa kanya. She exempted her own. So you call her, the one who freed, emancipated. It’s incongruity, si Cory,” he added.
Duterte said Aquino was only famous for losing her spouse, former senator Benigno Aquino Jr. who was assassinated at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport in 1983.
“Cory Aquino maybe popular. She is popular today. Why? For losing the husband in the hands of Mr. Marcos,” the Chief Executive also said.
