Duterte explains why he will never go to the US
President Rodrigo Duterte has a long-standing invitation from President Donald Trump to visit the United States.
But Duterte said he was not inclined to go to the US any time soon even if he considered Trump, who conveyed his invitation to Duterte during Manila’s hosting of the ASEAN summit in November 2017, as a friend.
Duterte feared that once he set foot in Washington D.C., some members of Capitol Hill would attack him for the thousands of extrajudicial killings under his drug war.
“Papaano nagpunta ako ng America, I was invited by Trump. Tapos isang congressman, isang senador, nagtindig doon na, ‘He is not welcome here. He is a violator of human rights’. Sabi ko bakit ako pupunta doon sa inyo?” said Duterte in a speech.
Duterte said Americans did not trust him because of his brutal style
“Ang problema ‘yung mga Amerikano nagdududa sa akin. Look, you practically drove me into the waiting arms of the Chinese government.
You were the ones responsible, you had two congressmen there took the floor in US Congress to denounce me as a violator of human rights and everything. At pinigil ninyo ‘yung armas,” said Duterte referring to the US State Department’s decision blocking the sale of 26,000 assault rifles to the Philippine National Police in 2016.
This was the reason Duterte made a pivot to China President Xi Jinping and Russia President Vladimir Putin.
“To this day, I’d like to say this to the Americans, to this day, ni hindi sila naghingi ng bayad ng utang ng loob, ni toothpick wala. Wala talaga. Magdududa sila,” he said.
