Duterte hits Rappler anew for its foreign ownership, tax evasion: Don’t believe their garbage!

In an interview with a Russian international television network, President Rodrigo Duterte lashed out at Rappler, a news website critical of the government, claiming that it was funded by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
“You know, please do not believe the media, especially the Rappler, the mouthpiece of the CIA and the US,” Duterte told Russia Today anchor Murad Gazdiev when asked about his absence during the eruption of Taal Volcano in Batangas.
“I was there before they made the announcement. I was there two days earlier then I went home to Davao to rest. When I came back last night, I went directly again to the evacuation areas. So, do not believe that kind of garbage that’s being dished out by Rappler,” he added.
The Chief Executive claimed that Rappler, which he banned from covering all presidential events since March 2018, is not 100 percent owned by Filipinos and accused them of evading their tax obligations.
“They have not paid their taxes, and we are questioning them because media must be 100 percent owned by the country, the Philippines.
“We found out that, for one, it’s owned by the Americans so it does violate the Constitution which says that the media or the press should be owned 100 percent by Filipinos,” he said.
