President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday said that he never promised Filipinos to get back the West Philippine Sea.
“I never, never in my campaign as President promised the people that I would retake the West Philippine Sea,” Duterte said in his “Talk to the People” address.
The Chief Executive said he never mentioned the territorial dispute between China and the Philippines during the election campaign “because that is a very serious matter.”
“I did not promise I would pressure China,” he claimed.
During his 2016 campaign rally at Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila City, Duterte said he would ride a jet ski to the contested Spratly Islands and plant the country’s flag there.
