President Rodrigo Duterte has been invited to visit the United States to attend a summit between the United States and the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on March 14 in Las Vegas, United States (US).

According to a press statement from Malacañang, the invitation was extended by US President Donald Trump to Duterte and nine other ASEAN leaders through a letter dated January 9, 2020.

The invitation was first conveyed during the ASEAN-US meeting at the ASEAN summit and related summits in Thailand last November.

It can be recalled that Trump skipped the 35th ASEAN Summit and sent National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in his stead.

Asked whether Duterte accepted Trump’s invitation, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said: “No official info on that.”
