Duterte mocks Muslim extremists dreaming of martyrdom: I’d like to have virgins here, not in heaven
President Rodrigo Duterte has poked fun at Muslim extremists who dream of becoming martyrs, saying he’d rather have the virgins they wish for on earth.
In a speech at a business forum in India Friday (January 26), Duterte called the ideology followed by Muslim extremists “totally bankrupt” since their reason for fighting does not make sense.
“And the come-on is that if you die a martyr, you go to heaven with 42 virgins waiting for you. Well, if I could just make it a come-on also for those who would like to go to my country,” he said.
“I said one of the most — is promising virgins when you go to heaven. I’d like to have the virgins here, not in heaven. God may not allow it,” Duterte added, drawing laughter from the crowd.
Duterte said he can talk about the twisted ideology of Muslim extremists since he is a “half Muslim” by virtue of his grandmother’s Maranao roots.
One of 2017’s biggest crises was the Marawi clash, which saw soldiers fighting Muslim extremists from the Maute group.
While the clash is already over, the President has ordered the military to continue running after terrorists who supposedly plan to attack other areas in the country.
