Duterte names Ex-ABC News Beijing bureau chief Chito Sta. Romana as PH ambassador to China

President Rodrigo Duterte has named Emmy award-winning journalist Jose Santiago “Chito” Sta. Romana as the Philippines’ new ambassador to China.

According to the Commission on Appointments, Duterte nominated Sta. Romana as envoy to China on Sept. 28.

Sta. Romana has accepted his nomination as the Philippine ambassador to China, saying he is doing so “with a deep sense of humility.”

He is known as an expert on Chinese affairs, having headed ABC News’ Beijing bureau for 39 years before returning to the Philippines in 2011.

Sta. Romana and his team won an Emmy in 2000 and was subsequently nominated for the same award in 2001 and 2006.

The former journalist’s nomination as envoy comes at a time when Duterte seeks to establish stronger ties with China while moving away from the country’s traditional reliance on the United States.
