President Rodrigo has greenlighted the public auction of the P704.8-million jewelry collection seized from former First Lady and Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos.
This was confirmed by Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo in a media interview in Japan on Thursday.
“Sabi ni Presidente kagabi na payag (siya) na makinabang ang taumbayan doon sa mga jewelry. So tinanong ko siya, ‘Are you going to give the go signal?’ Sabi niya, ‘Yes’,” said Panelo in an article from ABS-CBN News.
The Commission on Audit has said in its 2018 audit report that the disposal of Marcos’ multi-million dollar jewelry collection needed the approval of Duterte before it would go to auction.
In a letter to Duterte dated September 7, 2018, the Presidential Commission on Good Government sought the approval of the sale/auction of the three Marcos jewelry collections, namely the Malacanang Collection, the Roumeliotes Collection, and the Hawaii (Honolulu) Collection.
The three collections have an estimated value of $45 million.
