Duterte on emergency powers vs. traffic: Thanks, but no thanks

President Rodrigo Duterte has given up on his plan to solve the worsening traffic situation in the country.
“Ang EDSA, right at the beginning, we raised the possibility of being granted emergency powers. Yun talaga, you cannot improve on things without money nowadays, that is accepted, kada galaw mo, pera,” Duterte said on Tuesday.
“Now you want me to install some measures there, mitigate us at the very least. Eh ang unang lumabas sa newspaper, instead of baka tawagin kami or they would have a dialogue kung ano ang gagawin niyo sa emergency powers, how much are you going to borrow and what is the purpose of this and that, and naririnig ko, ah hindi, malaki ito, this is prone to corruption,” he said.
The President said he no longer wants emergency powers to address Metro Manila’s traffic woes. He would just leave EDSA “as it is.”
“Sabi ko huwag na. Kung ganun lang naman ang tingin ninyo sa akin, ‘di wag na tayong manghiram. Do not give me powers anymore… Anong gagamitin ko diyan? Laway ko? Pero kung maririnig ko lang sana na hindi, malaki ito, wala kayong tiwala sa akin, huwag na. Ako na ang tumatanggi. Ayaw ko na,” Duterte said.
