President Rodrigo Duterte defended his appointment of Gerald Bantag as new head of the Bureau of Customs (BuCor) despite pending criminal charges against him over a deadly explosion at the Parañaque City Jail in 2016.
“I think the case is in court. He’s facing homicide charges. I don’t think that he did it. If he did, then baka ma-convict siya,” Duterte told reporters Tuesday.
He added that Bantag is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Meanwhile, the President did not hide his admiration for Bantag who currently sits as the regional director of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Mimaropa.
“But in the meantime, gusto ko siya kasi nagtatapon ng granada daw,” according to him.
When asked about his marching order to the new BuCor head, Duterte said: “Alam na niya ‘yan. Siya man ang — siya man ang taga-BJMP, so alam niya. Marching order is to guard and so that they will not escape. That’s why it’s a penitentiary.”
