President Rodrigo Duterte wants a “step-by-step” approach to the planned relaxing of lockdown restrictions across the country, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said on Tuesday.
Nograles reiterated Duterte’s statement that vaccinations against the coronavirus disease must start first before the entire Philippines shifts to modified general community quarantine (MGCQ).
“Ang sinabi ni Pangulo talaga is there is a time for everything. So in the mind of the President, ang gusto niya pong mangyari is dapat makita muna niya iyong pag-rollout ng vaccines bago siya magdidesisyon at magri-reconsider doon sa MGCQ,” the Palace official said during a televised briefing.
“For him, it’s a step-by-step approach. Itong step muna before we go to the next step. So that is what the President wants to see firsthand na mag-rollout muna ng vaccination before niya i-reconsider iyong pag-i-MGCQ ng buong bansa,” he added.
The government’s Covid-19 task force earlier agreed to put the whole country, including Metro Manila, under MGCQ by March.
This, after National Economic and Development Authority chief Karl Chua recommended to Duterte the transition to the most lenient quarantine classification, citing the need to address hunger and poverty.
