President Rodrigo Duterte has directed Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III to talk to the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Joma Sison, who has been in self-exile in the Netherlands for around three decades.
Duterte made the statement at the situation briefing on the effects of typhoon “Tisoy” held at Legazpi City Convention Center in Albay Thursday evening.
“There can never be a statement that would end finality and everything that you say in public. I can always say that’s it, ‘I don’t want to talk to you guys, forget it’. But you know when you are there and I am there and I have, we, three times we attempted to talk sense dito and it has always failed,” the President said.
“I cannot stop e. Hindi ko pwedeng sabihin na, ‘Ayaw ko na makipagusap’. That is not a statement of a leader, of a President,” he added.
In November 2017, then Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza announced the termination of the government’s peace negotiations with communist rebels, citing “recent tragic and violent incidents all over the country.”
