President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the suspension of mining operations in Tumbagaan Island in Languyan, Tawi-Tawi.
In a virtual presser Tuesday, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Duterte was “very much concerned” about reports that the island has been “completed devastated” by mining operations.
“The island has, at this point, been mined out. While rehabilitation efforts are underway, the President is issuing a directive to stop any and all mining in Tumbagaan Island,” according to Nograles.
Duterte, he added, also ordered the rehabilitation of the area through tree-planting efforts.
“More actions will be considered as more light is shed regarding the state of the island and the conduct of mining operations in the area,” the secretary said.
